In the buffer and core zone of B\u00e0 B\u00ea National Park in Northern Vietnam I studied the impacts of national and international environmental and biodiversity conservation policies on resource use and local livelihoods of local people (ethnic groups of Tay, Dao and Hmong). Besides the human-nature relationships I was interested in the local political decision-making processes which resulted in reflections and publications on the implementation of a socialist democracy in Vietnamese communes. The systemic approach of political ecology allowed to describe and analyse the complex context with actors, policies and regulation and rapid transformation processes at various scales.<\/p><p>I had scholarships from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Janggen-P\u00f6hn Foundation. In Vietnam, I collaborated closely with my assistant and translator Tran Thu Huong and with HELVETAS Vietnam. All results were shared with HELVETAS Vietnam. My PhD supervisors at the University of East Anglia, UK, were Prof. Dr. Piers Blaikie and Dr. Catherine Locke.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2093\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2093\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon elementor-toggle-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened\"><i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened fas fa-caret-up\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-toggle-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Swiss Forest Policy.<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2093\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2093\">As scientific collaborator at the Institute of Human Environment Systems at the former Chair of Forest Policy and Economics (later Environmental Policy and Economics) I contributed to the COST Action E19 on National Forest Programmes (2002-2004). Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Willi Zimmermann we fed the insights from the Swiss forest policy context and the political participation into the COST Action as well as the Ministerial Conferences on the Protection of Forests in Europe. As results emerged publications and presentations on policy coordination and integration.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2094\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2094\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon elementor-toggle-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened\"><i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened fas fa-caret-up\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-toggle-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Innovedum Teaching Project \u00abEnvironmental Policy\u00bb.<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2094\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2094\"><p>I did my first field research on the Philippine island Palawan. From February to April 1998 I conducted interviews with the local population in two villages and did participatory observation while accompanying them during their agricultural and fishery work.<\/p><p>The fieldwork was enabled by contacts of HELVETAS Philippines and the collaboration with the non-governmental organisation Tambuyog Palawan. I had grants from the Nikolas and Berta Burckhardt-B\u00fcrgin Foundation and the Joseph and Olga Tomcsik Foundation.
